Thanks, Sara. I was definitely trying to be tricksy with this one. Note the clues that the reader isn't let in on until the 'big reveal', because they're either given a brief description or not mentioned at all. Bad writer. Bad. :)

The ending (as in the 'big reveal of the detectives identity) wasn't something I'd planned, it just kind of took a life of it's own. Initially I hadn't really planned on the detective being that important to a very short story (beyond the obvious act of solving the 'crime'). But as the story got longer, the detective became more important to the process. As I was wrapping up the story threads - it kinda hit me: I'd been assuming the detective was male (and had written the detectives growing personality as such). But that didn't have to be, did it? The mystery had taken on a somewhat Agatha Christie tone (hence the reference to Christie towards the end) and Christie's work is full of female detectives. So why not? And then that led into the whole Rabowirtz thing... And one more little trick on the audience. I just hope I haven't offended an entire gender with this piece...

Incredibly fun to write (and hopefully somewhat fun to read) but I'm not sure how realistic the whole thing is. Next time I'll try to be a little less tricksy, I think.
